Junk Mail

Junk, junk, junk, bill, junk, bill, junk, junk, postcard, junk?..

Sound familiar? What happened to the days of the lonely suburban housewife who waited with eager anticipation for the highlight of her day, the postman?s arrival? Now the mailbox is overrun with flyers, advertisements, credit card applications and other forms of junk mail. It seems to be an amazing waste of time and paper to cram our mailboxes with information that most people instinctively throw away.

The goal of marketing groups is to make their items stand out in our mail which is increasingly more difficult as the junk we receive multiplies each day. It is essential for anyone wanting to solicit the public to have something that catches their eye, or is so useful to them that they look forward to receiving it.

If you fall into the same basic demographic as my husband and I, you are the daily receiver of items from various realty companies. Every realtor in the Twin Cities region has at one time or another sent us a pamphlet, or if they are a successful realtor, a gift that might be of some use to us. So, we have the Vikings schedule magnet displayed on our refrigerator and some pens that sit next to all the other pens we receive from companies.

There is one realtor who has developed a marketing solution so effective, that his seasonal mailing is usually the first thing opened when it arrives. Harald Huglen of Coldwell Banker Burnet actually provides us with something that is cleverly disguised as marketing material, but is actually useful to us. Each quarter, we receive a Minnesota calendar of events outlining many of the fun activities that families and couples can do. This helps people get out there and enjoy their communities more, and benefits the events and locations by driving more people to visit. Sometimes, we?re even lucky to receive a supplemental guide for events like the Minnesota County Fair guide, the complete Gophers sports schedule or the schedule for all the great festivals in the state.

Hopefully you have been lucky to receive such a useful piece of ?junk mail.? If not, I have included some links below that has shown me that I need to get out more.
