Lakers on the ropes...

...and I couldn't be happier.

I have made no effort to watch the NBA finals this year. But the way the series is going isn't too surprising.

Consider that the Timberwolves took two games from the lakers with their third point guard starting. Consider the loss of skill by two of their starters (The Glove and The Mailman). And consider that they are playing a team that has a great defense, which some people are even calling the greatest ever.

When this series started, I was rooting for a comet to come out of the sky and hit the arena. But now, I've come to realize that this isn't "The Bad Boys" of 15 years ago. This is a solid team of strong defenders and passable shooters that can unseat the dynasty that never was.

One more win and the Lakers fall apart. Phil Jackson retires... Kobe goes to jail/Memphis... Shaq pouts that Phil is gone... Karl and Gary get another year older and slower.

The Lakers go from the premier team of the last 10 years to a team that will be much like the Spurs before Duncan showed up. A team with a dominant big man in the middle, and not much else. Seeing Shaq on a team that wins less than 30 games would warm my heart.

...and I couldn't be happier.
