No more illusions

I thought about doing yet another column about the men's NCAA basketball tournament, but decided against raising my own bile again. Read last year's column if you'd like my reasoning, but in the meantime simply know this: ask me to fill out a bracket and you DIE!!!!

So instead we'll reference Wade A's post in the SP.Com Forum. You know you love the Forum. It turns out that Terrell Owens has won his pissy-fit against the NFL, and will now be a member of the Philadelphia Eagles next year. Let me see if I've got the chronology right here:

1. TO has a clause in his contract that he can void the last years of his contract.
2. To do this, his agent has to notify the team by a certain date.
3. TO's agent misses the date, causing the contract to remain valid, whereupon TO's team trades him to another.
4. TO somehow thinks this has violated his rights, and cries like a little girl.
5. The league somehow thinks they're going to lose a hearing on the details of this case, and brokers a three-way deal so that everyone involved gets what they want.

I think this teaches a great lesson to the children of America. If, through negligence of your own actions or inaction, you don't get what you want, just pitch a fit and all will be taken care of for you. And on top of that, you get millions of dollars in salary.

We've reached a watershed day, folks. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to enjoy watching sports... but this is it. I will no longer be an apologist for athletes in any way. They make too much money, and they bitch way too much. You may apply this to owners as well, if you must, but I'll counter that with the fact that they had to work (most likely) to make the money to buy the team in the first place.

Additionally, I will be looking forward to the first time TO gets booed in Philly. When's their first home game?
