Spongmonkeys

Every once in a while (and it's getting more frequent), I see something that makes me want to throw my TV out the window. Something so insulting that makes me think that the "good" parts of television (ESPN Classic, Comedy Central, and Bravo, namely) aren't worth it.

(And no, I'm not talking about Boobgate. While inappropriate and tasteless, it was just a boob. Why people are getting riled up over that yet say nothing about the rampant killing shown in prime time is beyond me.)

Today, though, we're talking about mice. Dead mice. Selling sandwiches.

Quizno's introduced these little... things... on Superbowl Sunday. They're called Spongmonkeys, if that makes it any better. (It shouldn't.) I don't claim to know anything about advertising, but these things look like dead, mostly dead, or mutated mice wearing stupid hats. If I'm a food company like Quizno's, I'd work pretty hard to distance myself from being associated with, oh, vermin.

Would it kill companies and advertisers to appeal to a viewer's intelligent side? Like the Muhammad Ali / Linux spot from Superbowl Sunday-- a great ad. I guess when you want to appeal to a wide audience, though, you need to ditch witty dialogue and embrace talking oven mitts.

Or dead mice.
