Dialup Sucks

I find myself in Ft. Worth Texas this week. I'm at the headquarters for Bombay Company. You know, that store at the mall that has stuff that looks like it's from Pier One, but it's got a little asian/indian (the country, not native american) tone to it, and it's about twice as much money? Yeah, that store!

Anyway, I'm stuck using my modem to dial-up for my email and internet. Oh...my...god! I might just kill someone...this is so maddeningly slow.

I try not to be a GenX-zero-attention-span-technophile...BUT, I do expect my internet pages to load in less than 20 seconds. To add insult to injury, I'm connected at 24K. Which if you don't know is really really slow!

Maybe I'm horribly addicted to the internet, but I would give up my cable TV, my cell phone, and a lot of my other monthly bills before giving up my fast and reliable internet connection at home.

Of course for me it's more than just being able to look up who led the NL in batting in 1973 (Pete Rose). It allows me to work from home on Fridays, which is vital for my sanity. I've been consulting so long that having to work on Fridays seems like an invasion on my personal time! It allows me to check-in for my flights from home 24 hours before and therefore get a prime chance to move to an exit row seat (when I haven't been upgraded to first class)!

I pay bills online, I keep in touch with family online, I check the weather online, I buy books, clothes, CDs, gifts, and book vacations online.

All of which I can still do right now...just at 1/100th of the speed. Driving down my productivity even further...if that's possible.

Speaking of...I should probably get some work done.

:-D
