Deja Vu

Alex Movies

Funny how some things jump out at you. I wasn’t even really looking at the TV this morning, but this movie trailer caught my eye, and about ten seconds into it, and with nothing to base it on except what I’d seen that far in the trailer, I thought:

Sweet, a Tony Scott film.

Sure enough, I was right, which in some ways is a little bit scary. I have at least written before that I’m a fan of his visual style, so it wasn’t completely out of left field.

Needless to say, I’ll be seeing this film.

All the Presidents, Men

Alex Politics Skunch TV

Watch it now before the new Google overlords round up all who watch this to toil in their underground sugar caves…

I love the George W Bush snore, and as much as I love the Daily Show, I’ll admit it - I miss Killby a little bit.

AND… KO’s gonna run another “special comment” tonight on Countdown. I’ll post transcripts and/or videos in the comments section of this post when they’re available.

In the news…

News wadE

A bit of a news focused rambling for today…

First up is this article.  (Full Disclosure: I work for a Health Insurance company)  I can’t understand why health insurance companies get such a bad rap when it’s Doctor’s fees (which is really the fault of the Malpractice Insurance industry), overuse of unnecessary procedures (radiology is a huge culprit here, you sprain your ankle and you get an MRI instead of just taking an aspirin), and the pharmaceutical industry.  The amount of administrative fees that an insurance company charges hasn’t dramatically increased, but the medical costs certainly have.  That article is a great example of why health care is so expensive.  When a company charges $2000 when a $100 alternative might provide the same benefit, who picks up that cost?  We all do.  Health insurance is a socialist system of shared risk.  Us healthy folks pay more than we use to support those who aren’t as healthy.  And for those folks who point to folks like Dr. Bill McGuire as the poster boy for why health care costs are increasing, you couldn’t be more wrong.  Dr. Bill pocketed the money of investors.  His monster stock options didn’t take a dime from the premiums that are paid by the millions of people who are covered by UnitedHealth Group, it was money that was invested in the company from the millions of shareholders.

not guilty?

Football anderswa

this will be brief, but warranted mentioning.  please read this.  (then come back.)

just so i get this straight:  ko ro gets clocked going over 100 mph, promptly blows a 0.11…  and pleads not guilty.  not guilty?!?!  he’s either got huge stones, is an idiot, or i’m ignorant about the nuances of the legal systems.  (actually, all three of those are equally likely.)

two other observations:

a)  i don’t understand why, in some cases, the NFL jumps right in and suspends a player for the season less than a week after getting nabbed with a DUI (see Thurman, Odell) while robinson is allowed to play for over two months after his offense.

2)  the fact that ko ro signed with the packers is proof that god (or at least roger goodell) has a sense of humor.

Katherine Kersten: Conservative Columnist or Right-Wing Wack-Job?

News Politics Religion wadE

One of my least favorite Star Tribune columnists, Katherine Kersten, now has a new blog titled “Think Again“.

At first glance you certainly wouldn’t label Kersten a “right-wing wack-job”.  But if you read enough you’ll start to see the double standard she brings to her column.
